What is CEM Engineering and what do they do?

CEM Engineering, or Cogeneration and Energy Management Engineering, is a group of thermal power engineers that design and develop custom energy systems. Their headquarters is located in St. Catharines, Ontario with alternate offices in Oakville and Calgary [2]. Currently, they have completed 987 energy system projects and provide 181 MWe of power throughout Canada [1].

What services does CEM Engineering offer?

CEM Engineering does a plethora of different tasks, ranging from designing and creating thermal power systems to troubleshooting and optimizing existing ones. In terms of creating new power systems, CEM Engineering can develop energy service agreements, and go through preliminary engineering studies to gauge what can be done. In terms of existing projects, they optimize existing thermal power systems, troubleshoot boilers, and they test the performance and perform analysis of such systems [3].

In addition to this, CEM Engineering has a sister company called CEM Projects, which provide design and project management services [2]. Design services include schematics, detail designs, cost estimations, record drawings, and operating manuals. Project management services they provide include acquiring correct permits, project scheduling, managing the commencement of such systems, and auditing [3].

A specific example of a project CEM Engineering has tackled in the past involved installing a “D-Type” boiler along with over 900 metres of piping for Algonquin Power. The tasks CEM Engineering tackled for this project was providing design-build specifications for the project, and supported Algonquin Power in the design and commissioning of this project. This support included providing the Energy Services Agreement needed for the boiler installation [4].For more specific projects CEM Engineering has worked on in the past, check out their page here!

What opportunities does CEM Engineering have to offer to McMaster students?

CEM Engineering offers internship opportunities to post-secondary students, including McMaster students, interested in pursuing co-generation and energy management solutions. Their internships are typically geared towards engineering students.
